Shingles are sold by the square and packed by the bundle, and the bundle count is where re-roof orders go right or wrong. Here's the packing math, the waste factors that actually apply, and the weight line your dumpster depends on.
Quick answer: Standard architectural asphalt shingles: 3 bundles per square (100 sf), each bundle covering about 33.3 sf. Order squares × 3 with 10% waste for simple gables, 12-15% for cut-up roofs. A square of installed architectural shingle weighs roughly 200-240 lb.
The packing math
A square is 100 square feet of finished roof. Manufacturers pack architectural asphalt 3 bundles per square — each bundle lays about 32-33 square feet with the recommended exposure and overlap. The wrapper's coverage figure outrules any rule of thumb; a few heavy designer lines run 4-5 bundles per square, and their price per square reflects it.
Waste factors by roof
- Simple gable or hip, few penetrations: 10%
- Valleys, dormers, skylights, cut-up plans: 12.5-15%
- Steep 10/12+ with staging waste: 15%+
- Starter strip and ridge cap: come out of the same order — many crews add 1-2 bundles of cap or use dedicated cap shingles
Worked example
1,600 sf footprint at 6/12: multiplier 1.118 → 1,789 sf of roof = 17.9 squares → 53.7 bundles → 54 before waste → 60 bundles with 10%. That's 20 bundles per pallet (typical), so three pallets with a handful of bundles — return the unopened ones; most suppliers take them back.
The weight line — tear-off and dumpster sizing
Architectural bundles run 60-80 lb, so a square is 200-240 lb and a 20-square tear-off puts roughly 2-2.5 tons of shingle in the dumpster — before underlayment and nails. A standard 10-yard bin is usually overweight on a 20-square job; most roofers order a dedicated shingle trailer or a 15-20 yard roll-off and expect overage fees if it's mixed with general debris.
